Causes of Dehydration

Throughout the day, your body naturally loses water through urination and perspiration. But don't worry. As you drink and eat, lost water gets replenished and your body can continue to function as it normally does.

However, if your body loses more fluid than it's taking in, you may become dehydrated.

We know what you're thinking. "I drink lots of water throughout the day. How can I be dehydrated?"

Well, it's not always that simple. There are several factors that can cause you to dehydrate - even if you think you're drinking plenty of water. These include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Excessive sweating
  • Malnutrition
  • Electrolyte disorders caused by medications, chronic diseases or trauma
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Fasting
